Root Barrier Installation

Although it seems to be common sense, there is no substitute for planting the right tree in the right place. You generally will want to place the root barrier, root guide between the tree roots and the object you are trying to protect.

For example a side walk, parking structure or other object that may be damaged by the excesive growth of tree roots.

Important: Consider the size of the full-grown tree (both trunk and canopy). Check for possible utility conflicts i.e. underground pipes and cables as well as cables overhead.

CHOOSING THE CORRECT ROOT CONTROL SYSTEM:

Once again, let common sense be your guide. Consider the hardscape to be protected. Panels may be connected and placed in linear fashion to form a barrier to protect specific areas (driveway, patio, large area planters, median islands, paths, etc.).

Panels are flexible and can be contoured to fit around or within quite complicated shapes. Where hardscape or area to be protected is close and to all sides as in a street tree well, a surround or planter style application would be appropriate.

1) Contractor shall install the root barrier using the number of panels indicated and in the configuration shown on the drawings. It is important that the root deflecting ribs face towards the root ball. The top of the panel shall be ½" above the finish grade. Panels shall be connected by sliding the male end on each panel into the female connector on the next panel to form either a circle around the root ball or a linear barrier along adjacent hardscape, whichever is specified.

2) Excavation and soil preparation shall be as specified in the drawings.

3) In the case of surround style planting, the excavation shall be backfilled outside the barrier planter to a width of at least 4" with ¾" to 1 ½" gravel and crushed or roots. This is not necessary for linear applications.
